By Aaron Humes: A jury of nine in the High Court has found William “Danny” Mason guilty of kidnapping of a Mennonite couple, but not guilty of blackmail.
The guilty verdict delivered this afternoon was in a proportion of eight to one; the not guilty verdict was unanimous.
Co-accused Ryan Rhaburn was unanimously found not guilty on all counts by the same jury and is a free man.
Attorney Senior Counsel Simeon Sampson told our court reporter that the jury got it right as the evidence against his client was “poor.”
Meanwhile, Mason will make mitigation pleas on June 20 before Justice Nigel Pilgrim. Counsel Peter Taylor suggested the verdict was “confusing” because of the nature of the allegations against his client.
Director of Public Prosecutions Cheryl Lynn Vidal was lead prosecutor.
