By Aaron Humes: The call for pension justice is intensifying at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) as members of the KHMH Authority Workers Union express their discontent with the government’s recent proposals. Over three hundred workers say they face retirement without a pension plan, and frustration is mounting as negotiations remain stagnant.
On June 5, the union representatives presented a government proposal to their membership that was quickly met with dissatisfaction. Andrew Baird, President of the KHMHWU, stated today that it didn’t take long for members to condemn the proposal: “We tabled what was presented to us, and right after the meeting, we conveyed our condemnation of the proposal to the chairman and government officials.”

The government had promised to reconsider the proposal, specifically the contentious four percent contribution rate, and return with a revised offer by Friday, June 20. Baird emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, “We are waiting for tomorrow at eleven fifty-nine p.m. for their reconsideration.”
Despite the ongoing discussions, Baird made it clear that the union has not received a mandate from its members to withdraw from their current industrial action, which includes a work-to-rule policy and wearing T-shirts in solidarity. “We still continue our work to rule at this time. Tomorrow can determine whether we move forward with other affairs,” he noted.
