By Horace Palacio: A social media post by zookeeper Roxy Lemus Orellana has captured national attention after she shared an experience that highlights the harmful assumptions people often make about workers in manual or outdoor professions.
While performing her duties at the zoo—duties she takes immense pride in—Roxy overheard a passing comment from a guest who said to a child, “Dat da why you need fu study hard,” upon seeing her pushing a wheelbarrow. Though possibly unnoticed by the guest, the words stung.

“They clearly didn’t see the proud, trained professional behind the wheelbarrow,” Roxy wrote. “Pushing a wheelbarrow doesn’t mean I’m uneducated or less than anyone else.”
In her post, Roxy passionately defended her role as a zookeeper—a trained professional who has spent years caring for animals, supporting conservation, and educating the public. She emphasized the value of all forms of work, particularly those that contribute to a better world.
“There’s honor in every role that contributes to education, conservation, and a better world,” she said. “So next time, before judging someone by the tools they carry, think about the impact they’re making.”
Roxy also challenged the idea that intelligence or success is measured by whether someone works behind a desk. “Some of the most skilled, passionate, and highly trained people you’ll ever meet are out in the sun, sweating, lifting, building, and caring for animals, for people, for the planet,” she wrote.
Ending her powerful statement with pride and clarity, Roxy declared:
“I am a proud zookeeper. I am educated. I am essential. And I won’t apologize for doing work that matters.”
Her post has since resonated with many across Belize and beyond, with readers praising her for speaking out against stereotypes and honoring the dignity of hands-on professions that are often overlooked or misunderstood.
