By Horace Palacio: The Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) has issued a press release urging the government to engage in direct discussions over mounting concerns within the sugar industry. While expressing respect for the Prime Minister’s role and responsibilities, the BSCFA emphasized that the issues raised are not personal but reflect the serious sentiments of the farmers they represent.
In the statement, the BSCFA pointed to growing apprehension about what they describe as “alignment with multinational interests” and its potential impact on national policymaking. The association underscored the importance of inclusive dialogue, noting that all voices, regardless of status, deserve a seat at the table—particularly when it concerns the well-being and livelihoods of Belizean farmers.

“Open dialogue and understanding, rather than dismissal, will ensure that we all move forward together for the betterment of our farmers, industry, and country,” the release stated.
The BSCFA has extended an invitation to Prime Minister John Briceño, Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai, and Minister of State for Economic Development Osmond Martinez to meet and address outstanding issues affecting the sugar industry. The association has proposed Friday, April 4, 2025, or the earliest available date for this dialogue.
“For our farmers, for our sugar industry, for our country,” the statement concluded, reinforcing the association’s commitment to securing a future that safeguards Belize’s agricultural backbone.
