Living with autism brings its own unique set of challenges, and for caregivers, these challenges can often feel overwhelming.
Also, children and adults with autism face a spectrum of difficulties, from communication barriers and sensory sensitivities to social isolation and difficulties in navigating daily routines.
These facts were noted by Minister of National Mobilisation, Social Development, Family, Gender Affairs and Persons with Disabilities Senator Keisal Peters on World Autism Day, observed this year on April 2.
She was speaking at the opening of a session aimed at empowering caregivers of persons with autism.
Speaking at the Girl Guides Headquarters, Level Gardens, Minister Peters said that in observing World Autism Day, we are reminded of the critical importance of fostering a society that is compassionate, inclusive and supportive of all individuals.
“These struggles can make even the simplest of task more complex, and without the proper support and understanding, they can create an environment of uncertainty and frustration for many caregivers, these daily challenges are compounded by a lack of resources, insufficient support systems and societal misconceptions, the emotional toll is significant,” Minister Peters told the gathering of professionals.
She added that caregivers often find themselves sacrificing their own well-being in order to provide the constant care and attention their loved ones require, and there is a common struggle with isolation, as the unique needs of individuals with autism can make it difficult for caregivers to find spaces where they feel understood and supported.
“The lack of accessible information and tailored services also means that caregivers are often left to navigate these challenges on their own. That’s why World Autism Awareness Day must not only serve as a day of reflection, but also a day of commitment, a commitment to do better, a commitment to support our caregivers and individuals with autism to ensure that they have the tools, resources and understanding needed to overcome the challenges they face here in St Vincent and the Grenadines.”
Minister Peters reaffirmed that the Ministry of National Mobilization remains steadfast in its dedication to providing support, and as a result was hosting the vital session with a focus on empowering the caregivers who serve as the backbone of the autism community.
