By Horace Palacio: A growing number of Belizeans are demanding accountability and reform in how the country handles animal cruelty after a new wave of disturbing abuse cases has surfaced — with many echoing a deep-rooted frustration that such acts rarely result in justice.
Following the now-infamous video showing teenagers viciously attacking a horse with a machete, social media exploded with commentary. Among the most shared was a post by filmmaker and advocate Brent Toombs, who criticized the long-standing culture of inaction and impunity.

“Did anything happen to those school kids who beat a monkey to death a few years ago? Or those who set their dog ‘Bruno’ up to be eaten by a croc?” he asked. “This is what we can expect when there are never any real consequences for cruelty to animals.”
With the horse — now known as “Onny” — recovering under BAHA’s care, many Belizeans are saying the country must stop reacting with outrage alone and instead take legislative and judicial action.
Animal rights groups have joined the conversation, urging lawmakers to amend current laws to include mandatory jail time for extreme abuse, enforceable fines, and structured education or rehabilitation programs for youth offenders.
Whether this latest case will be the tipping point remains to be seen — but one thing is clear: the Belizean public has had enough.
