By Zoila Palma: Belize Water Services (BWS) continues to earn recognition as a regional leader in water and sanitation, following its active participation in two high-level meetings held in Barbados from April 6–8, 2025.
The events, hosted by CAF – the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean – and the Government of Barbados, focused on building a more resilient water sector across the Caribbean.

BWS Executive Chairman Cornelio Acosta joined government and utility officials, including Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, to discuss strengthening cooperation between Belize and Barbados in water management, capacity building, and innovation. A Barbados Water Authority (BWA) delegation is expected to visit Belize in the coming weeks to learn from BWS’s practices.
Chairman Acosta also took part in a regional conference attended by representatives from the Caribbean Development Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, World Bank, and Caribbean utility CEOs.
The conference tackled current challenges and strategies to modernize water services through technology and data-driven decision-making. Acosta shared Belize’s success in expanding service delivery and reducing water loss.
In recognition of its achievements, BWS has been invited to the 2025 Global Water Summit and selected to join the “Group of 300 Water Leaders” — a global network of utility executives advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation for All.
BWS’s consistent performance, including 24-hour water access and regional leadership in reducing water loss, positions Belize as a model for effective water sector management in the Caribbean.
