Prime Minister Andrew Holness says new housing projects must go beyond just building houses. He wants developers to focus on health and lifestyle too.
He spoke on April 10 at the start of a new project in Barrett Town, St. James. The plan is to build 1,400 homes there.
Dr. Holness said people need more than just shelter—they need healthy places to live. “We must build today not just for shelter but for health,” he said.
The Barrett Hall Housing Development is a joint project between the National Housing Trust (NHT) and West Indies Home Contractors Limited (WIHCON). The homes will be one- and two-bedroom units with open layouts and modern designs that reflect the community’s hopes and values.
Besides the homes, the development will have good roads, sidewalks, street signs, clean water, drainage, a sewer system, and electricity with streetlights.
Dr. Holness also stressed the need for places that help people stay active and healthy. He said that while the area might not have a swimming pool, it should have jogging trails and playgrounds. “These are not luxuries—they are part of living with dignity,” he said.
He added that children need safe places to play, away from TV and cell phone screens. “When we were growing up, we had places to play. Our children need the same chance to move, play, and make friends,” he said.
The Prime Minister wants Barrett Hall to be more than just houses. He wants it to be a place where families grow and stay healthy. He hopes people in the area will make daily exercise a part of their lives.
This new project with WIHCON marks the start of a big effort to build not just homes, but better communities focused on wellness and togetherness.
