Caymanian actress Rita Estevanovich has taken a big step on the small screen, appearing in Charlie Brooker’s British anthology series ‘Black Mirror’, which premiered on Netflix on Thursday, 10 April.
The familiar face for Cayman played the role of ‘Dr. Garcia’ in season 7 of the sci-fi series, which is based on an ‘abstrusely dystopian’ future. She was a guest star on episode 6, ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’, appearing alongside lead actress Cristin Milioti, who plays Nanette Cole.
“I feel proud to be able to represent Caymanians in the arts overseas,” Estevanovich told the Cayman Compass.
‘A very special moment’
In March last year, the West Bay native explained, she auditioned for the role of Dr. Garcia but didn’t know it was for the ‘Black Mirror’ series.
“It was a nice surprise to find out a few weeks at the live table read that, in fact, the role that I had auditioned for and had landed was for the anthology series. That was a very special moment,” she said.
Commenting on the experience of working on the project, Estevanovich noted, “We had a table read and we read the entire script and really it was such a fantastic response from everyone. The writing is brilliant and it was lovely to come together with everyone before actually shooting, but after that, I rehearsed at home a scene and a few script changes, and on the day we ran a couple of times.”
She added, “It was a joy really to work with the people I worked [with] on the set and overall, just a wonderful experience.”
Estevanovich has been on quite the journey over the past few years, playing stage, film and TV roles, including The Interpreter on ‘Beacons’, Dr. Lee on ‘Black Cake’, the Interviewer on ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’, and Gina Miller on ‘Bloody Difficult Women’.
After five-and-a-half years living abroad, Estevanovich said, “It wasn’t an easy decision to pick up and leave home, but I am happy to see the fruits of my labour.”
She added, “I want to thank everyone for the support and for the love and reaching out, and for supporting by also watching the films. Overall, I’m really pleased with the way this has gone and feel blessed to work with such an incredible team of people,” she said.
As for what’s next, Estevanovich will be working on a short film over the Easter weekend.
“It’s an important short film and will be very useful for many people, we hope, so I’m really happy about that,” she said, adding there was more to come.
