By Aaron Humes: While the two announced cases of measles in Belize originated from Chihuahua, Mexico, a northern state bordering Texas, the entire country is grappling with a rising number of cases, causing Belizean health officials to urge travelers to be vigilant, especially as Easter approaches.
Reports have also emerged linking measles cases in the Mexican state of Chihuahua to visitors from Texas, where over 500 cases have been recorded since late January. This situation is compounded by the fact that many direct flights arrive from Houston and Dallas to Belize daily.

Mexico has reported 126 confirmed cases and one death from measles, with the immediate neighboring state of Quintana Roo accounting for six of these cases. This has raised significant alarm among Belizeans planning to visit Mexico during the holiday.
Dr Natalia Largaespada Beer, a Technical Advisor in Maternal and Child Health, emphasized the importance of vaccination before traveling in a press briefing on Monday. “Any unvaccinated person traveling abroad who comes into contact with individuals infected with measles is at a higher risk for infection,” she cautioned Dr. Largaespada Beer stressed the need for travelers to review their vaccination status and consider getting vaccinated ahead of their trip, as the recent outbreak creates a perfect scenario for the virus to spread.
One of the key challenges with measles is that individuals can be contagious even before displaying symptoms, making it difficult to identify and avoid potential carriers. Dr Largaespada Beer noted that while travel bans are not currently being considered, public awareness and preventive measures are crucial to combat the issue.
Questioned whether adequate monitoring and reporting procedures are in place at the borders, Dr Melissa Diaz Musa, Director of Public Health and Wellness, assured the public that measures are being taken to enhance surveillance at points of entry. “We have trained public health inspectors at our borders and cruise ships who are actively looking for cases. They play a crucial role in surveillance and are equipped to identify and report illnesses,” she explained.
Belize’s increased surveillance will adjust based on the situation at each border, with health officials closely monitoring incoming flights and passengers for any signs of illness.
With Belizean travelers eager to enjoy the Easter festivities in Mexico, both Dr Largaespada Beer and Dr. Diaz Musa agree: vaccination is the strongest defense against measles. “Getting your vaccine is the best way to protect yourself,” Dr Diaz Musa stated, reinforcing that the key to preventing the spread of the disease lies in public health awareness and individual responsibility.
Belizeans are encouraged to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and consult with healthcare providers before making travel plans.
