Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced the appointment of Dr. The Most Honourable Desmond Haynes to the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee, ensuring that the West Indies maintains strong representation in this pivotal governing body in international cricket.
Haynes, a celebrated figure in the sport, enjoyed a prolific playing career from 1978 to 1994, during which he competed in 116 Test matches and 238 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), according to a CWI statement. His impressive record includes 7,487 runs in Test cricket, featuring 18 centuries, and 8,648 runs in ODIs with 17 centuries. Haynes was also an integral part of the West Indies team that claimed the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 1979 and received further recognition with his induction into the ICC Hall of Fame in June 2021.
Haynes steps into this role following the tenure of former West Indies all-rounder Roger Harper, who was noted for his contributions to the committee over the past three years. This appointment underscores the continued influence of Caribbean cricket on the international stage, as Haynes has significant experience in cricket administration, having recently served as the Lead Selector for the West Indies Men’s teams from January 2022 to June 2024. His extensive background positions him well to contribute to the discussions and recommendations made by the committee, which are vital for shaping the future of international cricket.
The ICC Men’s Cricket Committee plays a crucial role in the governance of the sport by advising on playing conditions, rules, umpiring standards, and other critical aspects of the game. Dr. Kishore Shallow, President of CWI, emphasized the importance of Haynes’s appointment by stating, “He brings his legendary status as one of our greatest opening batsmen but also his sharp cricket mind and deep understanding of the modern game.”
Shallow also expressed gratitude towards Harper, acknowledging his commendable service at the ICC level. The ICC Men’s Cricket Committee, composed of a chair with extensive cricket experience and various representatives from the cricketing community, operates to ensure an equitable progression of the game across all formats.
