Expressing surprise that the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) has chosen third vice-president Felicia Dujon to contest the St James North seat in the upcoming by-election, political analyst Peter Wickham says it is a continuing pattern of how the party treats to women.
He was reacting to the announcement by Opposition Leader Ralph Thorne, following the official resignation of Member of Parliament Edmund Hinkson effective Friday.
“I think the big surprise for me is the selection of Felicia Dujon as a candidate. I continue to have concerns about the manner in which the Democratic Labour Party positions women. I am struggling with this one, because my sense is that if she is one of their leading women right now, is it a waste to essentially risk a good candidate in a constituency where the prospect of success is very, very low?” Wickham asked.
“It takes me back to the old conversations where women in the Democratic Labour Party are presented as political cattle fodder. I think it’s unfortunate, because that’s one of the major issues that they’re struggling with right now. And, you know, it doesn’t help that perception that they have taken a woman who is . . . one of the few women now on their ticket, and essentially they’re presenting her in a seat that the prospect of winning is very, very low,” he noted, pointing out that St James North had one of the highest levels of Barbados Labour Party (BLP) support in the country.
