In an interview with Time magazine, U.S. President Donald Trump said that Crimea will remain part of Russia as part of a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine. He stated clearly: “Crimea will stay with Russia.”
The Crimea is a large peninsula with a narrow land access to the Ukraine. Crimea, regarded as a very beautiful area similar to the French Riviera, has many resorts and historical sites, like the Livadia Palace (where the Yalta Conference was held), ancient Greek ruins, and old Crimean Tatar settlements.
It was once a major vacation destination during the Soviet era and is still popular with Russian tourists today, but now receives few European tourists.
Trump also blamed Ukraine for starting the war, saying it began when Ukraine started talking about joining NATO. He believes Ukraine will never become a NATO member.
Trump said the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia are going well and that a deal is close. He said peace in Ukraine could be possible if he is president.
Some other bold claims came up in the interview. Trump said he was serious when he suggested that Greenland should become part of the U.S., that Canada could be the 51st state, and that the U.S. should take control of the Panama Canal.
He also spoke about the possibility of running for a third term. He admitted there are “loopholes” that could make it possible, but said he doesn’t believe in using them.
On Iran, Trump said he would prefer to make a deal rather than go to war. However, he warned that if Iran moved toward building nuclear weapons, military action might still happen.
He said the U.S. might also support an Israeli attack on Iran in that case. Still, he said he would be open to meeting Iran’s leaders, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
