Washington.- Leah Campos, nominated as the next U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic, announced that her top priority will be to limit the influence of the Chinese Communist Party in the country and the wider Caribbean region. Speaking during her confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate, Campos emphasized that countering China’s growing presence is a key objective of U.S. foreign policy.
She also pledged to address illegal immigration of Dominicans to the United States by working with local authorities to tackle the root causes of migration and strengthen border control efforts.
Campos’s potential appointment comes amid increasing U.S. scrutiny of the Dominican Republic’s evolving ties with strategic global players, particularly China.
