Santo Domingo.- The enduring legacy of master metal artist José Ignacio Morales, widely known as ‘El Artístico,’ is being celebrated in a poignant exhibition titled “Alma de Acero” (Soul of Steel). His family inaugurated the tribute with an emotional ceremony at Galería 360 shopping center, showcasing some of his most emblematic works.
Hosted in the atrium of Galería 360, the exhibition offers a glimpse into El Artístico’s talent, creativity, and ingenuity, displaying emblematic pieces that transformed metal into iconic art. The collection, which opened in early April, welcomes the public until Friday, May 30.
The inauguration ceremony was marked by deep emotion. Master of Ceremonies Hilda Peguero led the event, followed by central remarks from Jaina Morales, El Artístico’s daughter. She spoke movingly of her father’s innovative spirit, sensitivity, and altruism, and expressed gratitude to all attendees, who received a white flower bearing the biblical message: “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”
‘El Artístico’ left a profound mark not only in the cultural sphere but also through his social commitment. His work went beyond transforming metal into art; it transformed the lives of hundreds of young people by providing them with training and employment opportunities. A video tribute screened during the event featured family, friends, and notable figures reflecting on his life and career, emphasizing his human quality, vocation for service, and the widespread acceptance of his works, many of which are found in Europe, the United States, Brazil, and other countries.
Héctor Julio Medina Arias, a disciple of El Artístico, shared a personal testimony. He spoke of meeting his mentor at age 11 and receiving the opportunity to learn a trade that today provides for his family, underscoring El Artístico’s lasting impact on individual lives.
The event drew attendees including authorities from his native province, La Romana, along with personalities from the tourism and art sectors, and representatives from the Dominican Association of Tourism Press (Adompretur), led by its president Yenny Polanco Lovera. The Ministry of Tourism’s Folkloric Ballet provided entertainment, adding a cultural flourish to the tribute.
Jaina Morales, her mother Aida Santana Morales, and the entire family of ‘El Artístico’ extended an invitation to the general public to visit the exhibition. They encourage attendance as a way to continue celebrating the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to beautifying the country with his creativity and generous spirit.
