The United States has officially listed several of Haiti’s most dangerous gangs as terrorist organizations. This means tougher penalties for anyone helping them, especially people who sell them guns or send them money.
By calling these gangs terrorists, U.S. officials say they can now freeze bank accounts, stop weapons shipments, and arrest anyone in the U.S. who helps the gangs. This includes people who send money or guns, even if they don’t live in Haiti.
Former Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the new rules will help stop the violence that has forced thousands of people to flee their homes. “These weapons are killing civilians and fueling chaos,” he said.
One big change is for gun dealers in the United States. If they sell large amounts of weapons and don’t report suspicious sales, they could now be charged with helping terrorists. That could mean up to 20 years in prison.
An expert from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said dealers will now have to be extra careful. “If a customer buys twenty rifles and won’t explain why, and the dealer keeps quiet, that could be a crime now,” he said.
The U.S. says it will also send more agents to Florida and other coastal areas to catch people trying to smuggle guns and bullets to Haiti. In one recent case, agents found boxes of ammo labeled as car parts, headed to Haiti on a cargo ship.
Other countries, including Canada and France, may follow the U.S. and label these gangs as terrorists too. That could lead to more arrests and help stop money and weapons from reaching the gangs.
Some people in the Haitian-American community support the move. Others worry it might hurt innocent people or make life harder for Haitians living in the U.S.
The U.S. hopes the new rules will cut off the gangs’ supplies and make it easier for Haitian leaders and international groups to restore order.
