The Colonial Zone. The beisbol. The BlueMall. The JW. Santo Domingo has quietly become a growing travel destination in the Caribbean, thanks to a big push by tourism officials and a wave of new flight routes. (It’s even got its first-ever Kimpton).
Now, the city, best known for its 500-year-old, remarkably-preserved colonial neighborhood, is getting another major route, Caribbean Journal has learned.
Local carrier Arajet has launched sales for another route connecting Santo Domingo and the mainland United States: beginning June 16, the company will be running nonstop flights between Newark Liberty International Airport and Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International Airport.
It’s part of new US push for the carrier, which is also imminently launching nonstop routes from Miami to Punta Cana.
The expansion is part of a push by the country’s government to cultivate the country’s domestic aviation sector, and it seems to have worked, with Arajet initially expanding within intra-Caribbean flights (everywhere from Jamaica to St Maarten) and now setting out for flights to America.
Most notable? The route will be operating every day of the week, according to Arajet’s website.
So how much will the new route cost?
If you check one bag, the route is selling for about $452.79 roundtrip.
That’s less than what you’d pay on JetBlue, which has flights in June starting at about $485 roundtrip (not including a bag).
