
Ten students from various primary schools on the island are set to compete for the DBS Radio Felix Henderson National Reading Competition title today.
The competition is scheduled to take place at the Goodwill Parish Hall at 2:30 PM.
The finalists are Kyra David of the Ebenezer SDA Primary School, Amelia Desbonne of the Roosevelt Douglas Primary School, Adez Jno. Baptiste of the St Luke’s Primary School, Sanni Laville of the Pioneer Preparatory, Emoney Prevost of the San Sauveur Primary School, Kaylee Paris of the Lighthouse Christian Academy, Amelia Rolle of Bense Primary, Kierra John of Sineku Primary, Malique Smith of the Petite Savanne Primary School and Jahiid Walsh of the Berean Christian Academy.
Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Robert Guiste who spoke to State-Owned DBS Radio said the Ministry of Education has supported this initiative from its inception.

“The Ministry of Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training and National Excellence is proud to once again partner with DBS Radio in delivering the 2025 National Reading Competition,” he said. “As a founding partner, the ministry has supported this initiative from its inception 6 years ago.”
He said over the years many of the competitors have excelled academically, earning scholarships at the Grade 6 National Assessment and achieving outstanding results at the CSEC examinations.
Guiste took the opportunity to honour the late Felix Henderson whose vision and passion gave birth to this remarkable competition.
“He will always be remembered as a cultural icon and champion for literacy in Dominica,” he stated.
He continued, “The ministry remains committed to preserving its legacy and ensuring that his name continues to inspire generations of young readers.”
Furthermore, Guiste indicated that the Government of Dominica recognizes that reading is a fundamental skill that must be nurtured from the earlier stages of a child’s education.
“We wish to recognize the efforts of all participating schools in this year’s competition and extend congratulations to the 10 finalists,” he noted.
Meanwhile, three employees of the National Co-operative Credit Union Limited (NCCU) will also compete for the title of the best reader today.
They are; Nicole George, Nyrah Remy and Samine Darroux.
They will be reading in three rounds of the competition: Finance News, NCCU News, and Sports News.
