Twelve newly constructed fishing boats, aimed at bolstering the livelihoods of local fishers are set to be handed over to members of the community in an upcoming ceremony by The Emergency Agricultural Livelihoods & Climate Resilience Project. EALCRP, operated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy, released a statement describing what it states is the continued effort to support Dominica’s post-disaster recovery, calling the handover a “key milestone.”
According to the Ministry, these twelve boats, valued at EC$642,000.00, were built by three local boat builders and will be distributed to fishers across the West, North, and South fishing districts. The release added that the project plans to provide a total of fifty-four boats by June 2025, as part of its broader strategy to restore and strengthen the fisheries sector.
This effort, particularly in communities heavily affected by Hurricane Maria in 2017, underscores Dominica’s commitment to sustainable development and economic revitalization, shared the Ministry. Launching EALCRP was an ameliorative measure to aid in rebuilding these vital industries and enhancing climate resilience after the Category 5 hurricane caused extensive damage to the island’s agriculture and fisheries sectors.
The official handover ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 10:00 AM, at the site opposite Bertley Carrette’s/Hope boat building compound.
