By Aaron Humes: 18 days after he was tragically gunned down on the evening of Labour Day, May 1, while walking along Coney Drive, police have arrested one man and are looking for another in the murder case of Carlos Enriquez Avelar, 61.
22-year-old Jamal Maurice Brackett, a resident of Mayflower Street, was arrested by police over the weekend, and he was charged with murder. During his arraignment, which took place this morning, Brackett appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate. He was formally charged with the murder of Avelar but did not enter a plea. Given the severity of the offense, he was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison until August 18.

According to witnesses, two men on a motorcycle approached Avelar around 8:15 p.m. and opened fire, striking him multiple times before fleeing the scene.
This afternoon Staff Officer for the Department, Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith, addressed reporters, stating that while no motive has been established thus far, the police are continuing their investigation and believe that further information could clarify the circumstances surrounding Avelar’s death. The police are also actively seeking a second suspect involved in the shooting.
