By Aaron Humes: Rapper Travis Scott’s new album, Jack Boys 2, features a track called “Shyne” which samples Moses “Shyne” Barrow’s 2000 hip-hop classic “Bad Boyz”.
The song, produced by Ez Elpee, blends hip-hop with reggae and dancehall, incorporating elements from Grace Jones’ “Nightclubbing” and Barrington Levy’s “Here I Come (Broader Than Broadway)” – Levy appeared on the original track. Travis Scott’s version, featuring Glorilla, puts a fresh spin on the classic.
“Bad Boyz,” a top 10 hit when released, has been sampled by several notable artists over the years, including Sean Price, Cassidy, Young M.A., and Lady London, mostly in tributes while Shyne was incarcerated on charges related to the Club New York shooting.
Shyne Barrow expressed his pride in seeing his work inspire a new generation of artists, telling Breaking Belize News (BBN), “I am extremely humbled and grateful that my music continues to inspire some of the most popular artists in the world as I celebrate the 25th anniversary of my first album.”
A big question facing Shyne’s global fan base is: Will Shyne himself be making a comeback in a new era of hip-hop and musical integration?
