By Aaron Humes: The Colorado State University’s (CSU) forecasting team, led by Dr Phil Klotzbach, has released its final forecast for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. The team predicts 16 named storms, 8 of which will develop into hurricanes, and 3 will become Category 3 or higher. This forecast remains unchanged from the July prediction.
Meanwhile, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has updated its prediction for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, expecting between 13-18 named storms, between 5-9 hurricanes and between 2-5 major hurricanes.
The likelihood of above-normal activity is 50 percent, with a 35 percent chance of a near-normal season and a 15 percent chance of a below-normal season. The current average season is 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.
The forecasters acknowledge that this prediction comes with more uncertainty than normal due to conflicting signals across the tropics. While the Atlantic and Pacific water temperatures are somewhat supportive of tropical development, the upper-level winds over the Caribbean have been hostile, which typically indicates less storm development.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has identified two current potential development areas in recent days. Offshore of the Carolinas, a low-pressure system associated with an old front has a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression. If it tracks over the Gulf Stream, it could strengthen into Tropical Storm Erin. In the tropical Atlantic, a disturbance is slowly tracking with a medium chance of becoming a tropical depression. This system is expected to move north and potentially develop into a tropical storm.
Belizeans are encouraged to follow the forecasts of our National Meteorological Service and be prepared to respond when a storm threatens.
