The Government of the Virgin Islands has not issued an official press release for more than six weeks and has made no announcement about a change in its media strategy, but this does not mean the flow of information has stopped. Instead, officials have been using other channels to share updates with the public.
The government’s website continues to carry bulletins, photos, statements, and videos in the Media Centre. These items are not always labelled as press releases, but they still carry important announcements, such as road closures and community events.
Social media has also taken on a larger role. The official Facebook page, the X account @BVIGovernment, and the government’s YouTube channel have all been active in recent weeks. They provide quick updates, video clips, and posts aimed at reaching a wide audience.
The Department of Information and Public Relations, also known as the Government Information Service, is at the centre of this work. It is responsible for public relations, graphic design, video and audio production, and online content. In recent months it has even sought new staff, including social media and broadcast specialists, showing how much emphasis is now placed on digital communication.
Local television and newspapers remain important as well. Outlets such as 284 Media, The Island Sun, and the BVI Beacon continue to report government announcements and carry community stories that might not appear in the press release section of the official website.
Amid this shift in communication style, one of the most positive stories of the last two weeks came from the Department of Waste Management. On August 8, it recognised residents who had gone above and beyond in caring for public spaces. The initiative highlighted local efforts to keep the islands clean and green, rewarding environmental stewardship and encouraging others to join in.
This story stood out because it combined community action with government recognition. It showed how ordinary people contribute to keeping the islands beautiful and how the government is willing to celebrate their work. At a time when most headlines are about finance or regulation, it provided a welcome reminder of local pride and cooperation.
Although the press release section of the website has been quiet, the government of the Virgin Islands is clearly continuing to share information in new ways.
The use of social media, multimedia updates, and community stories shows a move toward faster, more flexible communication with the public.
