The Bahamas is hosting the 47th Regional Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference from September 5–12 at the Margaritaville Resort.
The event is part of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), which brings together more than 180 parliaments across the Commonwealth to strengthen democracy through dialogue and cooperation.
More than 80 delegates from 16 countries were expected in Nassau, though Jamaica and Guyana are not attending due to their own elections.
At a September 3 press conference in the Senate, Senate President Lashell Adderley said the gathering was vital for strengthening democracy in the region. She explained that the week-long sessions would cover constitutional issues, new laws, and regional economic and social concerns.
Speaker of the House Patricia Deveaux spoke about women in politics, stressing both the obstacles and the progress. She noted that women now hold many top posts in The Bahamas, including Governor General, the heads of both parliamentary chambers, and the Royal Bahamas Police Force. Deveaux said she was confident that women’s leadership would continue to grow.
Alongside the main sessions, there will also be Women in Parliament and Youth conferences. These will focus on climate change, gender equality, women’s empowerment, budgeting, and lawmaking from a gender-based perspective.
