A WestJet aircraft was damaged when it made a “hard landing” at Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) in Sint Maarten – a key connecting hub for travellers to Anguilla.
The incident involving flight WS2276 – a Boeing 737-800 – from Toronto, occurred at 1.31pm on Sunday, 7 September.
There were 164 passengers and crew on board but no-one was injured during the landing, which left the plane’s right wing damaged and forced the temporary closure of the runway.
In a press release later the same day, the Princess Juliana International Airport Operating Company NV (PJIAE) confirmed the incident.

“We are relieved to report there were no injuries. Out of an abundance of caution, three individuals were taken for medical evaluation,” it said.
“There was no fire; however, contact with the runway caused damage to the aircraft’s right wing.”
It added that the company is working with local partners and heavy equipment providers to safely remove the aircraft from the runway.
“As a result, the airport will remain closed until further notice. All relevant civil aviation authorities and SXM stakeholders have been notified,” the press release said.
The airport later issued an additional notice that said due to the incident, flights may be affected.
“We urge all passengers to contact their airline directly for the most up-to-date information regarding their travel. Thank you for your understanding.”
A statement from WestJet the same day confirmed that the plane had experienced a “hard landing” but said it is awaiting confirmation of the exact nature of the incident.
“Emergency services responded immediately deploying foam as a precaution,” it said.
“The aircraft’s slides were activated, and all guests and crew safely evacuated and were transported to the terminal. All guests are accounted for and there are no reported injuries.”
WestJet added that its teams are focused on supported the guests and crew, ensuring their safety and care remain a top priority.
