Claiming the right to self-governance has undoubtedly been the greatest of our achievements. September 19 will forever be cherished by Kittitians and Nevisians. And justifiably so. Apart from being a historical date, it is a representation of resilience, willpower, and optimism for the future. Becoming a sovereign state brought with it a renewed pride and an insatiable desire for progress.
Independence, better yet “freedom” has enabled us to boldly chart our own path – to shape our great nation to suit our needs and be illustrative of what we truly are as a people. Our ancestors are known to have toiled in unforgiving, inhumane circumstances. They will never ever be forgotten. We are sure that they would be proud to know that their years of bondage have not been in vain.
Over the years we have been able to highlight and display our unique cultural identity. To express who we are; our unbridled love for life. That aspect of our existence has cemented a continued sense of unity.
The annals of our history are filled with the resolute fight, exemplary leadership, and unrelenting advocacy of our greatest leaders and other key figures who have proven themselves to be unwaveringly dedicated to the cause of freedom, equality, and self-determination.
Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, Sir Caleb Azariah Paul Southwell, Sir Joseph Nathaniel France, Sir Simeon Daniel, Dr. Sir Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds are foremost in our minds. It was through the devotion, guidance, and dreams of these great men and other significant figures that the rights and freedoms of their people are today secure. Their unblemished legacies continue to be sources of inspiration for us all.
Saint Kitts and Nevis is continuously striving to enjoy self-sufficiency. We recognise that with autonomy comes profound responsibility to maintain and sustain that which we enjoy.
The welfare of our Federation must be placed above partisan interests. Cooperation across political lines is essential for the nation’s long-term prosperity. It’s referred to as putting country first. The recent public displays and acknowledgement of collaboration between St. Kitts and Nevis, are indicators that we are heading in the right direction in this regard.
There have been strategic investments in all spheres. There has been a refreshing recognition of the importance of accountability in governance. Mismanagement of public funds cannot be encouraged. There are signs that everyone is on the same page with respect to eradicating that concern.
Political divisiveness will be tough to tackle; many among us are fixed in our ways. We must recognise, however, that we have a nation to build. It would probably help if we took heed of the words of our beautiful national anthem.
More than four decades later, the sound of “O Land of Beauty!” still makes us emotional. It must also heighten our awareness of what matters most.
The two stanzas remind us of our peace, freedom, strength of will and love, and that we are bound together with a common destiny, most importantly with God in all our struggles. We stand for justice and liberty with wisdom and truth, and will serve and honour Him.
We faithfully believe that no sword nor spear can conquer, for God will sure defend, and that His blessings shall forever to posterity extend.
Happy 42nd Independence Anniversary to all!
