People in Black River, Jamaica, are desperate after Hurricane Melissa left them with no food, water, or electricity.
Survivors are scavenging through wreckage and entering damaged shops to find anything edible or drinkable. Residents say no official aid has reached them days after the storm hit. Buildings are flattened, boats overturned, and roads blocked. Many have lost everything.
Some, like Demar Walker, say they have been forced to take supplies from wrecked supermarkets to share with others. Pharmacies have also been looted as hunger and frustration grow. “Chaos, chaos. Total. No food. No water,” said one woman, Chegun Braham.
Others are guarding what remains of their shops to prevent more theft.
Officials report that 90% of homes in Black River have been destroyed, along with key facilities like the hospital, police station, and fire station.
The mayor admits that looting is happening but says he understands why. At least 19 people have died in Jamaica and 30 in Haiti.
Many residents still cannot reach family due to broken roads and phone service. Aid from Kingston is slowly being delivered, but access remains difficult.
