Family, friends and community members gathered at the Just Tender Care Nursing Home in North Side this week to celebrate Anguilla’s newest centenarian.
Codvis Edora Connor turned 100 years old on 6 November, a milestone that drew warm tributes and reflections on her long life and contributions to the community.
Among those attending the celebrations were Governor Julia Crouch and Deputy Governor Perin Bradley, and several government ministers.
A statement from the Governor’s Office said: “It was a heartwarming occasion filled with reflection, celebration and appreciation for a life well-lived.”
Social development minister Shellya Rogers-Webster, who was also at the event, said it was a pleasure to be able to celebrate Mrs Connor’s birthday.
“She’s certainly been a staple in the Anguillian community for a very long time – and even if persons don’t know her you may know some of her children, her grandchildren.
“They have played pivotal roles in the development of Anguillian society – many of them are public servants.”
Opposition members Haydn Hughes spoke fondly of Mrs Connor, saying she had a little corner store and she gardened fruits, vegetables and ornamentals.
She was born on 6 November, 1925, he said, married at age 16 and lost her husband at the age of 32 while being pregnant with her seventh child.
“She didn’t complain. She didn’t seek help from the government as there was none. She rolled up her sleeves and worked hard,” he said.
