Dozens of charter yachts and hundreds of yacht brokers gathered at Nanny Cay Marina on Tuesday for the annual BVI Charter Yacht Show.
More than sixty BVI-based luxury crewed charter yachts were on display — a record number for the event, according to Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley.
“We have a record amount of crewed yachts here tonight — 65-plus crewed yachts. We have a record amount of crewed yacht brokers or charter yacht brokers. Over 165-plus brokers are here from all over the world. We have 35-plus local businesses right here tonight,” he said to applause from a cheerful audience on Tuesday, November 11.
The Premier said the strong turnout signalled a promising season for the territory’s charter sector, which he described as vital to the Virgin Islands’ overall tourism product.
“The charter yacht business is central to the BVI’s tourism product, and by God’s grace and mercies, it’s looking like it’s gonna be a great season, and I wish each and every one of you a great season. This is where it’s getting started,” Dr Wheatley added.
He thanked stakeholders in the sector and pledged the government’s continued support for the charter industry.
“It provides so many jobs, so much revenue. It circulates cash into the economy, it provides cash for our businesses here, and we couldn’t do without it — so thank you,” said Dr Wheatley, who also serves as Minister of Finance and Tourism.
The three-day event was organised by the BVI Charter Yacht Society (BVICYS) and is described as a premier showcase of the region’s finest luxury yachts and professional crews available for the upcoming charter season.
