Abuja, Nigeria — March 27, 2026 –
Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew has announced that St. Kitts and Nevis joined the international community at the United Nations in formally recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as one of humanity’s greatest crimes, following the successful adoption of a landmark resolution led by the President of Ghana, His Excellency John Mahama.
Delivering the keynote address at the Afri-Caribbean Investment Summit in Abuja on March 25, Prime Minister Drew underscored the historic importance of the resolution, which garnered overwhelming global support, including unanimous backing from member states of both CARICOM and the African Union.
“I wish to recognize His Excellency, the President of Ghana, who is today tabling before the United Nations a resolution that affirms the transatlantic slave trade as among the gravest crimes ever committed against humanity,” the Prime Minister stated.
Dr. Drew confirmed that St. Kitts and Nevis stood firmly among the co-sponsors of the resolution, aligning with a unified Afro-Caribbean position rooted in justice, remembrance, and international recognition. “St. Kitts and Nevis is a co-sponsor of this resolution, and we look forward to its successful passage within the United Nations,” he noted at the time.
The resolution has since been adopted, marking a historic milestone in global diplomacy and moral acknowledgment. Prime Minister Drew emphasized that its passage reflects the growing strength and cohesion of advocacy efforts between Africa and the Caribbean on issues of shared historical significance and justice.
He further framed the development as part of a broader movement toward deeper unity and strategic cooperation between the two regions. According to Dr. Drew, this alignment extends beyond economic collaboration into the realm of diplomacy and global policymaking, as Africa and the Caribbean continue to shape international discourse in ways that honor their shared history and advance their collective future.
