By Zoila Palma: The Benque Viejo Town Council joined Benqueños in the annual Easter traditions of sawdust tapestries and the reenactment of the Passion of Christ.
Community members painted the streets united by faith, art and tradition.
On Good Friday 2026, the streets of Benque del Carmen Town were filled with believers, faithfully carrying out the tradition of the powerful live reenactment of the Passion of Christ, the Via Crucis.
Before dawn, families, local artists and volunteers work for hours transforming ordinary sawdust into vibrant, detailed masterpieces using stencils, water and colored dye sawdust, which are prepared weeks in advance at the House of Culture in Benque. These temporary tapestries blend deep religious devotion with contemporary messages, which turn Benque Viejo Town into an open air gallery of color, faith and creativity.
“Combined with the live Via Crucis which brings to live the story of Jesus’ journey to the cross, with local actors moving through the streets in a heartfelt display of tradition that draws many from across Belize and beyond.
The Benque Viejo Town Council wants to thank each and every one for making Benque Viejo unique and full of tradition ever year,” the Benque Viejo Town Council said.
