Police have charged a Virgin Gorda man after officers reportedly found a firearm and suspected cannabis during a routine patrol on the sister island.
The Royal Virgin Island Police Force (RVIPF) stated in a press release that officers attached to the Virgin Gorda Police Station were on mobile patrol on March 27 when they observed a man acting in a manner that aroused suspicion in the vicinity of a local establishment.
Officers approached the individual and conducted a search, during which a firearm was discovered on his person, the release stated. A further search of a nearby vehicle, carried out in his presence, led to the discovery of a quantity of green vegetable matter suspected to be cannabis, police added.
The man was identified as Kyle Kabel, 26, of Valley, Virgin Gorda. He was arrested and later charged with carrying a firearm without a licence, unlawful possession of explosives, and unlawful possession of a controlled drug.
Police said the firearm was a Glock .45 handgun and that five rounds of .45 calibre ammunition were also recovered. Officers also reported seizing 31 grams of cannabis.
Kabel appeared before the Magistrate’s Court and was ordered remanded to His Majesty’s Prison until May 2026.
The RVIPF said it “continues to take a zero-tolerance approach to illegal firearms and controlled drugs,” adding that “possession of illegal weapons and substances is a serious offence and will be dealt with accordingly.”
The force also urged members of the public to report information related to illegal firearms or drug activity.
