By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Day [Dallas Edition] planning committee has announced the cancellation of Belize Day (Dallas) 2025, citing concerns over the impact of recent U.S. immigration policies on immigrant communities, including Belizeans. The much-anticipated annual event, scheduled for September 20, will not take place this year due to fears that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence could create an atmosphere of anxiety and uncertainty.
In a statement released by the organizers, they expressed their deep regret over the decision but emphasized that their priority is ensuring attendees feel safe and comfortable during celebrations.
“We make this difficult decision in light of the recent U.S. immigration policies being enacted, which have created a general atmosphere of fear and anxiety amongst immigrant communities, including those of our Belizean brothers and sisters,” the committee said.
The statement acknowledged the significance of the event, which has been held in Dallas since 2012 and has provided a space for Belizeans to come together and celebrate their heritage. However, organizers feared that the growing concerns over immigration enforcement would dampen the spirit of the occasion.
“Our event has brought joy, happiness, and a sense of togetherness to attendees since 2012, and we feel that this will be dampened by the existential threat of an ICE presence,” the statement continued.
While the cancellation comes as a disappointment for many who look forward to the annual event, the planning committee reassured supporters that Belize Day (Dallas) will return in 2026.
“We wish everyone a safe and happy Independence and hope to see you all again in 2026,” the organizers said, closing their statement with optimism for the future.
Belize Day (Dallas Edition) has long been a cherished celebration among Belizean-Americans, offering music, food, and cultural performances that honour Belize’s heritage and independence. The unexpected cancellation of this year’s festivities is a tough pill to swallow for many in the Belizean community in the United States, bringing to light real worries about how immigration enforcement is affecting events meant to bring people together.
With Belize’s Independence Day celebrations still set to take place in other locations, Belizeans in the United States will likely seek alternative ways to come together and commemorate the Jewel’s 44th anniversary of independence.
