The University of Guyana is getting over 1,200 applications each week for the 2025/2026 school year.
Students can apply for degree, diploma, and certificate courses until May 16.
UG confirmed it will no longer charge tuition fees. This follows a government decision to make university education free starting January 1, 2025.
A press release said, “Tuition is free from January 1, 2025, for all new and continuing students for Diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programmes offered by the University of Guyana.”
The university is urging students to apply early, especially those waiting for their CSEC or CAPE exam results. Some programmes have limited space.
President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali first made the announcement in Parliament on October 10, 2024. He said it was part of his party’s campaign promises.
He stated, “We’ll be moving forward with our promise to provide free university education at the University of Guyana.”
He added that over 11,000 current students would benefit immediately, along with all new students in the future.
The government also created the Guyana Online Scholarship Programme, which has already helped 29,000 citizens get access to higher education.
