Businessman Lesmore Smith says he is weighing a return to frontline politics, this time potentially as an independent candidate, as he seeks “God’s guidance” ahead of the next general election.
Speaking on the Talking Points radio programme, the founder of Top Priority Security Services confirmed that no final decision has been made about which political banner he will run under.
“As it is now, I’m an independent person. I am not afraid to stand alone, but I’m also happy to associate,” Smith said, signalling that while he is open to joining a party, he is currently leaning toward an independent path.
Smith, who was aligned with Ronnie Skelton’s Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM), previously contested the 2019 general election but did not win a seat. He said loyalty has played a major role in his political decisions, adding that he remains loyal to Fifth District Representative Kye Rymer. He explained that he had previously pledged not to challenge Rymer out of respect, but suggested that position has since evolved.
“I told him I’m hoping to be in the Fifth District canvassing… I’m not going to hide from you. I’ll be transparent,” Smith said.
Despite this, he was careful not to criticise the incumbent, noting that his interest in the district is about offering a different perspective rather than dissatisfaction. “Everybody has their own skill set… I probably have a different approach,” he added.
Smith also acknowledged the challenges of running outside of the traditional party structure but hinted that his status could change depending on political dynamics closer to election day.
“Being an independent could be a challenge, but that doesn’t mean I’ll be independent on the day in question,” he said.
For now, Smith says he remains focused on service, pointing to his 25 years in business and community involvement as evidence of his commitment.
