Gabriel Escarrer, CEO of Meliá Hotels International, said that the chain feels “very supported” by the Dominican government and its president, Luis Abinader, in every project that the hotel chain carries out in the country. They have a very well-established synergy between the public and private sectors.
In that sense, he revealed the chain’s intention to expand the brand in DR destinations such as Santo Domingo, Miches, and Puerto Plata.
“Without a doubt we want to invest in other destinations outside Punta Cana, we are working on projects in Punta Bergantín, Puerto Plata; and we want to be in Santo Domingo, Miches, and others. There are many opportunities and we are not going to let any of them slip away”, he emphasized.
He indicated to arecoa.com that “we would like to be in Pedernales but for the moment we are concentrated in the three zones mentioned above”.
With the aforementioned intentions and the plan to have a hotel in Santo Domingo, Escarrer inspected the Colonial City during his stay in the Dominican Republic for the opening of Zel Punta Cana to continue deepening the initiative to have a Meliá hotel in the Dominican capital.
“I believe that Santo Domingo has a wonderful historic center and has a stupendous potential, just as Havana and other places had at one time,” he said.
In addition, Escarrer recently visited the Miches area with the Minister of Tourism, David Collado.
In the case of Punta Bergantín, Meliá and the Puntacana Group signed an agreement of intentions with the Bergantín Trust to construct the third hotel within the tourist project being developed in Puerto Plata.
Meliá has a 20% participation in this project. It will be its seventh hotel in the DR, projected as a five-star establishment with 300 rooms.
