Hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is now on trial in New York. Opening statements have begun in a case that could see him spend the rest of his life in prison.
Combs is charged with sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transporting people for prostitution. The most serious accusations fall under racketeering. Prosecutors say he kidnapped and drugged women, forced them into sex acts, and used threats and firearms to control them.
Although perhaps not on the scale of the O.J. Simpson trial, there is expected to be a great deal of public interest in the Combs case, given the lurid nature of the allegations the courtroom proceedings are likely to attract intense media attention throughout the trial.
In the first week of testimony, two witnesses are expected to speak briefly. A third witness will take more time on the stand, prosecutors said.
Combs has denied all the charges. He rejected a plea deal.
He is also facing dozens of civil lawsuits. Individuals claim he used his fame and power to drug, assault, rape, intimidate, and silence people. Combs says these lawsuits are just people trying “for a quick payday.”
