By Breaking Belize News Staff: A prison inmate already serving time for another offense has been handed an additional eight-month sentence after pleading guilty to handling stolen goods.
Robert Westby, 34, a labourer from Sandhill, appeared before Magistrate Ludlow Black in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he changed his plea from not guilty to guilty. The charge stems from a police investigation on February 26, 2025, following a report of stolen items.
Police say Westby led officers to the New Site area and showed them a collection of goods he claimed to have purchased in Placencia. The recovered items included a basketball, a black Wahl-brand trimmer, and several fishing rods, totaling over US$1,300 (BZ$2,635). The complainant later identified the items as hers.
Westby was charged two days later and, upon his guilty plea, was sentenced to nine months in prison. One month was deducted for his early plea, resulting in an effective sentence of eight months, beginning July 16, 2025.
