Christopher Terry has become the first Caribbean chef to be nominated for the prestigious Chef of the Year award in the Maldives, marking a significant milestone for Antigua and Barbuda on the international culinary stage.
Terry, who currently works at The Nautilus Maldives, was selected as one of six finalists for the coveted title at the Hotelier Maldives Awards. The nomination recognizes chefs who demonstrate innovative menu creations, leadership qualities, and the ability to engage with diners while excelling in kitchen operations.
“This recognition is not just a personal achievement, but a win for Caribbean chefs and Antiguans everywhere,” Terry said in a social media announcement. “I am proud to say that I am the first Caribbean chef to receive such a nomination, and it fills me with immense pride to represent my roots on this global stage.”
The Chef of the Year category evaluates nominees on their ability to create innovative menus, motivate and train their teams, and contribute to profitable food and beverage operations. Judges also consider the chef’s impact on restaurant ambience and their role within the hotel’s overall operations.
Terry is competing against five other internationally recognized chefs: Ahmed Jameel from One&Only Reethi Rah, Alok Verma from OZEN LIFE MAADHOO, Amila Silva from Heritance Aarah, Ishag Solih from Royal Island Resort & Spa, and Taylor Jayne Shearman from JOALI BEING.
In his announcement, Terry expressed gratitude to his supporters and called on Antiguans to vote for him through the Hotelier Maldives website. “Let’s proudly raise our flag and showcase our talent to the world,” he said.
Voting for the awards is open until April 25, with Terry hoping to bring the prestigious title back to Antigua and Barbuda.
