Disclosure by The New York Times media outlet that the Donald Trump administration is considering closing the US diplomatic mission in Grenada will not be the first time that a US Administration has threatened to shut the mission’s doors. The Grenada mission opened in February 1984.

A report in the 3 May 1994 archived edition of The New York Times showed that the Bill Clinton administration had planned to close the embassy in St George to save money. Following the end of the Cold War, the administration had determined that Grenada was of little strategic importance. “This action is to be taken only in response to budgetary pressures and in no way reflects on Grenadian-American relations or on the commitment of the US government to our friends in the region,” the State Department said about the pending closing.
Another report published on 15 May 1994 said that there was a change in plans because “bowing to Congress, the State Department has tentatively decided to keep the American Embassy in Grenada open.” The Clinton Administration had planned to close the embassy as a cost-cutting measure; however, congressional aides said that the plans to close several Caribbean posts left the impression among some members of the Congressional Black Caucus that the administration was “picking on” that region in search of budget cuts.
Officials who spoke on condition of anonymity also said several Republicans objected to the proposed shutdown in Grenada because of the sacrifices made by American forces who invaded the island in 1983, of which 19 died.
On 15 April 2025, The New York Times reported that the US diplomatic mission in Grenada is among 30 diplomatic missions that the US State Department is considering closing. Citing a document in its possession, the news outlet said that the Trump Administration intends to close 10 embassies and 17 consulates.
The mission in Grenada plays a key role in fostering bilateral relations between the 2 nations, providing support to US citizens, and promoting shared interests. It also acts as a point of contact for Grenadian citizens seeking consular services or information about visiting or immigrating to the United States. The embassy works to strengthen international ties and promote mutual understanding between the United States and Grenada.
