Lunar New Year celebration showcases deepening cultural ties between nations

The courtyard of the Chinese Embassy transformed into a vibrant tapestry of red lanterns and traditional music Saturday evening as Antigua and Barbuda welcomed the Year of the Fire Horse—a convergence occurring only once every 60 years in the Chinese zodiac.
Dignitaries and community leaders gathered for an evening that transcended celebration, becoming instead a reaffirmation of strengthening bonds between two nations united by mutual respect and shared aspirations.
“The Spring Festival is the oldest and most important traditional festival in Chinese culture,” Her Excellency Jiang Wei, Chinese Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda, told assembled guests. “It marks a time for family reunion, carrying forward timeless values of peace, love, and harmony.”

Ambassador Jiang highlighted 2025 as a watershed year, with China’s economy surpassing $20 trillion in GDP while Antigua and Barbuda’s regional prominence continued growing. Governor General Sir Rodney Williams, Prime Minister Gaston Browne, and Ministers E P Chet Greene and Daryll Matthew each emphasized the collaborative spirit defining the bilateral relationship.
The achievements were tangible: Chinese participation in Carnival brought cultural vibrancy; agricultural experts worked alongside local farmers; the Booby Alley Housing Project took shape; nearly 300 Antiguans and Barbudans travelled to China for training; and the islands welcomed increasing numbers of Chinese tourists.
“We are greatly impressed by the long-standing friendship between China and Antigua and Barbuda,” Ambassador Jiang stated, drawing on the horse’s symbolism of progress as a metaphor for the nations’ forward momentum.
Festivities began at 4:00 p.m. with a bustling Fun Fair featuring calligraphy demonstrations, chop stick games, paper arts and Hanfu dress experiences. As tropical dusk settled, the formal reception commenced at 5:30 p.m. with both national anthems being played.
Ms Leng Yufei delivered a medley bridging traditional and contemporary Chinese music. The Confucius Institute presented “Ode to Young China”, celebrating aspiration and vitality. Shiva’s School of Dance electrified the crowd with culturally authentic choreography, while interactive games and authentic Chinese cuisine enriched the cultural exchange.
The Year of the Fire Horse, characterized by “double fire” energy, embodies vitality, independence, passion, and transformation. The horse symbolizes progress—making 2026 auspicious for advancing shared goals.
“May China and Antigua and Barbuda enjoy prosperity and its people happiness and well-being,” Ambassador Jiang concluded. “May our friendship improve all the time. May everyone enjoy good health and great fortune in the Year of the Fire Horse.”
As guests departed under the Caribbean night sky, the evening’s message crystallized: this was a testament to friendship built on mutual respect, collaborative achievement, and shared vision—a partnership poised to gallop forward with the transformative energy befitting the Fire Horse.
