It was a morning of inspiration, sharing, and partnership building as Sashanna McVean sat with the team at Huggins to share her passion and plans for her community and her own personal development.
The company was honoured to have had the opportunity to invest in McVean by providing her with a much-needed laptop and accessories on Thursday, 18 September, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. The sponsorship, which is valued at just under $6,000, comprises a Dell Pro 16″ Windows 11 Pro laptop, a wireless Bluetooth mouse and a wireless Bluetooth headset.
McVean is a dedicated and dynamic youth leader who is currently pursuing an online Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency and Disaster Management at Munroe University. In addition to her academic pursuits, McVean is an innovative agro-processor and the owner of Sasha’s Smokehouse, which specialises in local saltfish, jerk saltfish, seasoned saltfish and local oils. This highly motivated and disciplined young woman is also the National Youth Parliament representative for St John. Having excelled in sports, McVean is a past national athlete who represented Grenada with distinction in basketball, netball and volleyball. Her passion for agriculture and community development is driven by a deep desire to give back to society, recognising those who supported her along her journey from very humble beginnings.
Chief Executive Officer of Huggins Anya Chow Chung expressed how thoroughly impressed she was with McVean’s youth leadership activities and, in particular, her chosen area of study. She extended an invitation to McVean to meet with the company’s active and well-structured Disaster Preparedness Committee to exchange ideas and make recommendations, particularly in the area of risk mitigation and post-disaster recovery. Chow Chung said, “I love to see young people advancing and equipping themselves to take up future roles as community leaders. Having had the opportunity to spend some time learning more about McVean and her plans for St John, I feel comforted that Grenada’s future is in good hands. She is an exceptional young woman and I trust that the investment Huggins is making in McVean will go a long way in assisting her to realise her dreams and materialise her objectives.” She encouraged McVean to continue to share her future projects with Huggins, as the company is always looking for healthy and meaningful community partnerships.
McVean expressed her gratitude for the timely gift, which would assist in her training and development in areas not limited to disaster response, but also business continuity and contingency measures and proper preparation for impending disasters. Her active involvement in post-Beryl activities as a member of the rapid damage assessment team propelled her to pursue this area of study.
Huggins remains committed to fostering youth talent and strengthening community resilience through meaningful collaborations and support, and wishes Sashanna McVean every success.
